Boost your skincare routine with a burst of ingredients from a facial mask that can revolutionize your regimen! Whatever your skin type or challenge, using a face mask can quickly and easily target specific concerns such as oiliness, dryness, dullness, blemishes, brown spots, fine lines, and laxity in the skin. When trying to achieve maximum results, remember to consider masks in conjunction with routinely used products such as a standard cleanser, exfoliant, and moisturizer. Still on the fence about devoting a 12 minute “time out” to a mask? Read on to become a believer in the benefits of facial masking!
Do Skin Care Face Masks Actually Work?
The skin is a barrier and does a great job at keeping stuff out – and that’s good news because there are a lot of not-so-good things out there that could creep into your stratum corneum! So, what do we do when we actually want to try and get some good things in like vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and the like? It’s time to break out the masks! The main reason they work and can help ingredients wiggle in the skin is due to their occlusive properties. Occlusive means that these masks form a barrier over the skin keeping the active ingredients wet, and well, therefore, active! This allows time for them to absorb down to the deeper layers of the dermis where they do their best work. Face masks will also contain a high concentration of specific ingredients to quickly address skin care concerns so results are more immediate and visible.
How Often Should You Apply a Face Mask?
Face masks can be applied three to seven days per week, depending on the make-up of the mask. Some “sleep-on” masks that absorb into skin for an overnight slumber party of hydration and healing can be used nightly while others such as clay-based masks with active ingredients to banish blemishes should be used no more than three times per week to prevent over-drying. With the plethora of possibilities, it is best to read directions and then observe skin to make the final determination of how much is enough of a good thing.
When to Apply a Face Mask in a Skin Care Routine
Masks can generally be applied any time of the day. Some work best as early morning pick me ups while others do their best work on the night shift. Whenever you have 10-20 minutes of “me time” whether it is while folding clothes, making the morning coffee, or relaxing in the tub, anytime is a good time to mask. If you are incorporating it into your regimen, a mask would be applied after cleansing and exfoliating. After removal of the mask, you can whisk away any residual with a toner and then follow up with the application of serums and a moisturizer. Some masks are actually formulated to exfoliate dead skin cells. In that case, you would use right after cleansing for best results. What Is the Best Face Mask for Skin?
Different types of skin demand different types of masks! Here are some customary formulations that will address common concerns so that you can identify which types of masks are best for you:
Gel Masks – aloe vera, glycerin, or hyaluronic acid are frequently the base of gel masks. They are typically hydrating and can be used on most skin types. Some are even formulated to quickly absorb into the skin and can be left on overnight for a calming and moisturizing treatment without the use of heavy creams or oils.
Clay Masks – bentonite and kaolin are two common clays that are useful for absorbing extra oil, unclogging pores, and removing impurities from the skin. These masks work well with oily, congested, blemish prone skin. Some may contain moisturizing agents to prevent over drying while others may incorporate actives such as salicylic acid or charcoal to boost the natural clearing properties of the clay.
Exfoliating Masks – getting rid of dead skin cells and revealing a fresh complexion is the outcome of exfoliation. These masks can contain enzymes such as Papain from Papaya or Bromelain from Pineapples to chomp away at debris while others may contain a variety of acids to get the job done. It is even possible to incorporate physical exfoliation with a “scrub it on and leave it on” mask that begins with manual removal of dead skin and ends with enzymatic or chemical exfoliation or just a deep quench of moisture.
Cream Masks – when dryness and irritation are the culprits, look for cream-based masks that incorporate plant butters such as Shea or Mango whipped with oils like Coconut, Jojoba, or Olive Squalane. Hyaluronic Acid can immediately plump tissue while Ceramides help fortify the skin barrier.
Sheet Masks – these face-shaped masks cut from a thin cloth or bio-cellulose material are great for masking on-the-go. Infused with specialty serums to address a multitude of skin maladies, these can be popped into a purse and then applied whenever the moment strikes you. After removal, simply blot extra serum with a towel or gently massage into skin with no need to rinse. Most likely spied on airplanes, in dorm rooms, or in a movie trailer post makeup removal!
