There are three major categories of ingredients that help keep skin moist: humectants, emollients and occlusives. Humectants, such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid, draw water into the skin from creams and the environment. Emollients help to soften skin while occlusives form a protective barrier on tissue to trap in moisture. Plant oils are emollients and occlusive and will help lock in hydration that is already in your skin or is introduced by your cream or lotion. Therefore, when layering products, it is important to apply humectants first and then apply oils on top to keep moisture from escaping.
