The word “acid” conjures up images of bubbling test tubes and thoughts of scary chemicals, right? But when used at the right concentrations, acids are actually some of the most beneficial ingredients available in skin care products. Acids are the miracle tools used to fight acne, wrinkles, age spots, scarring and uneven skin tone. In fact, they’re the key to happy skin! Salicylic Acid
Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) which is either naturally derived or biosynthesized from bark of the willow tree. Unlike AHAs which are water-soluble, beta hydroxy acids are oil-soluble, which means they are able to penetrate deeper than your skin surface and deep into your pores. BHAs lightly exfoliate your skin’s top layers on their way deeper into your skin where they exfoliate excess oil and dead skin in your pores. This penetrative action makes BHAs ideal for treating all types of acne, from surface whiteheads or blackheads to deeper cystic acne. Not only does salicylic acid penetrate and treat acne, it also has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that help treat against future acne and swelling. If your clients are wanting to bid acne and troubled skin adieu, a product containing salicylic acid could work wonders on their skin! Glycolic Acid
Glycolic acid is one of the most popular alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) used in skin care. It comes from sugar cane and is the smallest AHA, so it’s the most effective at penetrating into the skin’s layers. Glycolic acid is a fantastic anti-aging tool that seems to do it all – reducing fine lines, preventing acne, fading dark spots, increasing skin thickness and evening out skin tone and texture. Not to mention, glycolic acid is an extremely effective exfoliator that clears away dead surface skin cells that build up and clog pores. When these dead skin cells build up, whiteheads and blackheads will form, which can lead to an acne outbreak. If your client is needing a good exfoliant, glycolic acid may just be the thing for them! The Citrus Scrub in our Purity Collection is a refreshing, astringent botanical scrub containing jojoba beads and glycolic acid that buffs away impurities, blackheads and dead cells. Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid, HA for short, is a naturally occurring substance in the body. One of its main jobs is to retain moisture, and as a single molecule, it can hold up to a 1,000 times its weight in water. This keeps your clients’ skin looking and feeling healthy, youthful and moisturized.
Without adequate levels of hyaluronic acid, our bodies are unable to retain moisture, contributing to fine lines, wrinkles and roughness.
