In some of our more recent blogs, we’ve discussed the benefits of hemp oil and CBD for your skin but now with the passing of the Farm Bill, everyone will be able to reap the amazing qualities that hemp-derived CBD has to offer! The passage of the Farm Bill could potentially affect everything from your morning coffee to your skin care regimen because it sets the stage for CBD to go big-time with a new wave of products.
So, you might be asking yourself, “What does the 2018 Farm Bill say about hemp, exactly”? First things first, it’s important to differentiate industrial hemp – the plant that’s addressed in the Farm Bill – from the one that typically comes to mind, which is marijuana. Although both are varieties of the cannabis plant, industrial hemp contains less than 0.3 percent THC, while marijuana is cannabis with 0.3 percent of THC or more.
Since the passage of the 2014 Farm Bill, only certain farmers were allowed to cultivate industrial hemp as part of a pilot program – one with a lot of rules and restrictions as to how much hemp could be produced and why. That’s one of the reasons we’ve started to see so many beauty and wellness products containing cannabidiol (CBD, the non-hallucinogenic form derived from the cannabis family) as well as hemp seed oil enter the market over the past couple of years. Hemp officially was lumped in with marijuana in terms of its regulation – meaning it was what’s called a Schedule 1 drug, which requires a prescription and is highly regulated.
The passing of the 2018 Farm Bill, however, brings that pilot phase to an end, allowing industrial hemp to be grown more freely nationwide. This gives manufacturers the opportunity to experiment with hemp-derived CBD oil and incorporate them into their skincare products.
